PreemieTest

Diagnostic technology for assessing neonatal maturity and supporting clinical decisions after birth.

Logótipo do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS).

TECHNOLOGY INCORPORATED INTO BRAZIL’S SUS

Brazilian Ministry of Health · 2026

The neonatal skin maturity optical reader has been incorporated into Brazil’s Unified Health System.

Meet the technology

A skin reading. More information for care.

PreemieTest takes a non-invasive optical reading of newborn skin and converts the collected signal into clinical information on neonatal maturity.

The technology provides scores that complement the clinical examination and support physicians in assessment and decision-making after birth.

The clinical challenge

The first decisions call for a more complete picture of neonatal maturity.

Gestational age is an important reference, but it does not, on its own, describe the full maturity of a newborn or their clinical risk.

When prenatal data are incomplete or uncertain, or when neonatal risk needs to be assessed quickly, additional information on maturity and respiratory adaptation can support clinical assessment in the first hours of life.

The optical principle

What light reveals about skin maturation

Skin changes as a baby develops. So does the way it interacts with light.

From skin response to clinical information

During pregnancy, skin develops and its structural and optical properties change. Part of the light emitted by the probe interacts with the tissue and returns to the sensor.

PreemieTest measures this optical response. Processing relates the collected signal to neonatal maturity to support the estimation of gestational age and lung maturity. This is neither a photograph nor a measurement of the baby’s weight.

How assessment works

A simple sequence carried out by professionals in accordance with the instructions for use.

01

Skin contact

The optical head is placed against the newborn’s skin to take a non-invasive reading.

02

Light-based reading

The technology analyzes the skin’s optical response and collects information associated with its maturation.

03

Signal processing

The collected signal is processed by PreemieTest models to generate the different clinical indicators.

04

Clinical information

Scores and probabilities are presented to the healthcare professional to complement the newborn’s assessment.

ASSESSMENT RESULTS

What PreemieTest provides

The optical skin reading provides clinical information on neonatal maturity and respiratory risk, complementing the newborn’s assessment.

Neonatal maturity

Indicators that help characterize newborn maturity, including the Skin Maturity Score and estimated gestational age.

Lung maturity

Diagnosis of lung maturity, with probabilities of requiring ventilatory support, respiratory distress syndrome and admission to a NICU.
